Gimp for Nokia 770 is coming?
Thursday August 04th 2005, 5:13 am Category: Nokia 770 development

Internet Tablet Talk introduces KidSketch, a simplistic graphics animation app on Nokia 770, but Simon Budig hints at bigger things coming: Gimp on 770:

Gimp maintainers (Sven Neumann and Michael Natterer) both were lucky bastards at the Guadec and both won a Nokia 770. I am fairly certain that they will hack on that when they have the device in their hands. However, this should not stop anybody from diving in the code and get familiar with it. :-)

On the multiple mouse buttons: Since Gimp is also intended to be used with graphics tablets as well most functions are accessible with a stylus. You’ll miss some convenience things (like middle mousebutton panning) but these should not be essential.

So yes, I definitely believe that it is possible to have Gimp on the Maemo or GPE platform, it even should be possible to nicely integrate it with Hildon, although IMHO a nicely done pure GTK+ embedded interface has bigger chances on getting accepted for Gimp CVS.

Video of Doom on 770

Marcelo Eduardo left a comment here pointing to the new video of Doom on Nokia 770:

It’s not that easy to get used to pen gaming, but in doom I think it’s almost as good as it can be. You can type on the screen to open doors, you have all major functions on a GUI bar below game screen, and the positioning is based on how much you need to use them (dooh)

Niclas Lindh on Nokia 770:

How many times have you been sitting on the patio or the couch, enjoying some quiet intarweb surfing, but there’s an itch, a splinter in your mind to quote Morpheus: My laptop is too big. I should not need something this big to surf the web. And now Nokia has felt your pain. Will supposedly cost around $350 whenever they get around to releasing it. Based on Debian, so all kinds of nifty software can be compiled for it.

Screen protector for 770
Wednesday August 03rd 2005, 2:53 am Category: Nokia 770 accessories

Gotta love the eBay sellers. The Nokia 770 is still promised by Q3 2005 (July already out, so my bet is late August, just in time for back-to-school sales), but the accessories such as screen protector are available. $14.95 buy it now.

Russell Beattie excited about Internet tablets
Tuesday August 02nd 2005, 10:26 pm Category: Unrelated news

Russell Beattie got a Sony PSP, but what he has to say is relevant to the 770 market as well, and he mentions 770 as another exciting development in the mobile gadget world. He’s not exactly happy about the $350 price sticker, but here’s what he has to say:

There are tons of opportunities here! Just like when the Wipeout Pure browser hack was first found, people started automating a bunch of household stuff to make the PSP into a sort of universal remote. This is a great idea: Anything with a web front end can now suddenly be “remotely controlled” by this device and others like it. I envision that Web Tablets are going to replace the “laptop on the lap on the couch” and the morning newspaper quickly. It’s just a REALLY convenient way to read the web without the bulk of even a Tablet PC - it’s so light and convenient and quick to pick up and start using. This is soooo key.

Doom on Nokia 770

I was a bit slow to post this last week (family visiting), but Marcelo Oliveira left a comment here with a link to his demo of Doom running on Nokia 770, which seems to be running very fast (that’s to return to the earlier reviews of Nokia 770 being reported slow). “The game is running incredible fast at fullscreen”, Marcelo says. 770 Fan also has a post about it.
