Comment by Bud Olivares 12.05.05 @ 1:41 am

yep got me one too at compusa! They had three, I snagged one

I paid more, but at least I got it sooner.

Now to cancel the nokia web site order.

Damn nokia

Comment by WirelessDJ 12.05.05 @ 7:45 am

My local CompUSA had 2 in stock for $399. On the box sticker seal I noticed “V.2″ Does anyone know if this means there is a hardware revision or something?

Comment by Tweak 12.05.05 @ 7:53 am

And I bet the extra $100 is not going into Nokia’s pocket. Compusa is probably paying the same $300 for each unit. Now for Nokia to screw his online custommers! Truly shame on you Nokia.

Comment by Me 12.05.05 @ 8:04 am

Bud, I really don’t follow your logic. Calm down, dude… :) It a business afer all.

Comment by Jari 12.05.05 @ 8:38 am

I think what Bud is referring to is that the early (and enthusiastic) supporters went to the Nokia web site and pre-ordered a 770.

Early adopters are the kind of people that will show the device to all of their friends to “ooh” and “ahhh” over.

These people also tend to fill up blogs and on-line forums with good comments.

This is simply good marketing. You want to fill the media with good buzz to help launch a product.

I would guess the number of pre-orders was fairly small compared to the number of units that Comp-USA would demand to “fill the channel”. Certainly Nokia could have pulled a few units out of its hat to fulfill those orders?

Instead, now you have early (and usually vocal) adopters that are honked off. My guess is that the marketing damage would be small, but why encourage ANY bad press?

‘Been a Nokia user and fan for over a decade now. Just ordered their newest phone for Verizon. Have been waiting for the 770, but after seeing it at CompUSA (for $40 over Nokia’s price, BTW), I’m dissappointed. Near $400 on such a sophisticated device ought to get at least a Symbian-inspired calendar and address book to make it compete with Palm. My palm died two weeks ago and this would fit the bill, but with no PIM, it looks like another Palm for me. I hate that, because I love everything else about the 770, but just can’t justify the cost when I’d still need a Palm to go with it . . . .

Comment by Dando 12.06.05 @ 1:34 am

I checked my local compusa today and they said they never had any in stock. The nokia 770 is listed as coming soon on the website. This makes me disgruntle to say the least because I had hope of being able to pick one up this weekend. Thanks for giving me false hopes.

Comment by Ghostblur 12.06.05 @ 2:18 am

Just bought one at the local CompUSA store.. Been waiting for so long I’m not even excited anymore… but it’s streaming Simpsons episodes from my home computer using orb.com over my bluetooth cell phone… can’t complain!

Comment by generalgau 12.06.05 @ 2:57 am

Just called Nokia USA to check on my (November 14th) order. They said, “Well, that’s a pre-order and the product is not yet released.”
I said, “Well, they have it for sale at the local CompUSA.”
“Well, that’s true but we don’t have any yet. It’ll be shipped sometime in December. Would you like to cancel your order?”
I can’t justify an extra $90 to pick it up locally. If I have to cancel my order, I won’t ever buy one. If they don’t ship soon, I will cancel my order.
Damn it.

I had called Nokia USA last week to see what their response was for the delay. I had ordered on November 15th when the shipping date was listed as the 17th. The Nokia representative was of no help to me. There was no ETA in their system, so she couldn’t even tell me if I would receive it by Christmas, she couldn’t give me free expedited shipping, etc. I was not happy to say the least, but I was unwilling to cancel my order.

Then after hearing about some CompUSA’s having it in stock, I went to the nearest CompUSA yesterday, and was able to buy one (they had 4 in stock). I had DOUBLE instant gratification last night — getting my Nokia 770 and being able to cancel my order from Nokia USA :-)

Comment by maxer 12.06.05 @ 3:14 am

Do any of you think that perhaps the reason for the delay in shipping the 770 is that they are changing it somehow, like adding more RAM or fixing software bugs? If so, perhaps they wanted to dump their current inventory on someone (like CompUSA) who could absorb them all and handle returns etc. while they ramp-up production on their new model. Just a thought…

On the other hand, perhaps this is just a simple production hiccup. I know of no other device using those 800×480 screens, so perhaps they are hard to come by.

Then again, maybe Nokia is so big that NokiaUSA simply doesn’t know what the 770 division is doing. The 770 is so different from other Nokia products that I suspect it originated from a totally separate (Skunkworks?) group that perhaps is not well integrated into the production processes of the rest of the company. Consequently, we get choppy production and backorders.

Comment by Randall 12.06.05 @ 6:16 am

As a reply to the comment by “ME” yeah CompUSA is marking it up. It costs the company $305.00. But tell me where you are going to find something this good with all these features for this much? It’s worth $500.00 Get over it.

Comment by Joey 12.06.05 @ 7:29 am

Got mine yesterday at CompUSA. They had 3, including one for display, that the salesperson told me they just got yesterday (Sunday). I’m not sure CompUSA is teaching these salespeople just what the 770 is because I had to convince the salesperson that the 770 didn’t need to be ‘activated’ (like a cell phone). I agree that the rollout of this product by Nokia has been handled poorly but the device IS revolutionary and I predict success despite Nokia’s initial bungling.

Comment by Ben 12.06.05 @ 7:33 pm

Having been involved in software development of a product that sold in CompUSA as well as through direct order, I can assure everyone here that Nokia is NOT making money by selling them through CompUSA for $400 instead of through their direct sales force at $360 (or $350 or $310, depending on your coupon-savvy). With the amount of money that companies have to pay retailers simply to get their products INTO the stores, I guarantee that the only people making money by selling the 770 for $400 through CompUSA is CompUSA. Companies (at least the company I worked for) used to use CompUSA only for product visibility, as the costs incurred to sell through them was far greater than the the costs incurred to sell the products directly.

There’s no way that the $400 CompUSA option is a way for Nokia to make money over the $360 (or $310) option through direct sales. This looks like a simple distribution mistake by Nokia.

Now this strikes me as a dumb move by Nokia, or the distribution to CompUSA was a result of legal pressure by CompUSA to fulfill a distribution contract that was signed months ago — something that happens in retailing more we think. It’s definitely not a move by Nokia to squeeze more money out of the product.

Oh and by the way, my local CompUSA didn’t have them in stock. :-(

Comment by TeeSee 12.06.05 @ 10:10 pm

TeeSee, thanks for the voice of reason. I am pretty sure you are right, and would be willing to bet $4.99 :) that Nokia had indeed made a deal with CompUSA a long time ago, and could not simply pull out the CompUSA supply to deliver them to online customers instead. I would imagine such a move would have a) “destroyed” or at least worsened Nokia’s relationship with CompUSA b) possibly included some penalty to Nokia for breach of contract.

Comment by Viipottaja 12.07.05 @ 2:12 am

On the CompUSA website you can type in your zip code to see the stock level of the 770 at nearby stores. I’m in San Francisco and all the nearby stores have them. I went to one and sure enough, in stock, though I didn’t check the actual number available.

As for playing around with it, I just got to hold it. It was set to French and kept erroring out over the connection. :( Tapping on the screen only produced the error message.

nokiausa.com’s website says that they’re filling the large number of backorders. My question is: How far along are they? If you’ve gotten yours, could you post when you ordered it? It would be nice to see where we’re at. Thanks.

Comment by Vinh 12.07.05 @ 2:34 am

However, that fails to account for why they then offered to sell them dircectly on-line. I’m sorry but I don’t buy it.

My take is that the CompUSA deal was a last minute deal that involved Nokia committing to not delivering any orders before X-Mas. Price competition not wanted by either.

Whether or not they are making money on the CompUSA deal is irrelevant to the consumers they offered the device.

On top of that, it leaves us to speculate on why they are acting in such a bone headed fashion. A statement from Nokia — not order support — is called for at this time.

Comment by jlh 12.07.05 @ 2:55 am

I just recieved an e-mail from nokia stating that: Unfortunately, we have not been able to complete your order ,and ask that you please call the NokiaUSA Customer Care department at 1- within 72 hours or your order will be canceled.

Once the information is corrected, we can process your order.

I called, and the rep said it still wasn’t available to ship but that they were trying to authorize my credit card and had failed, she then retried and it worked. hopefully this means they are preparing to ship.

Comment by nj 12.07.05 @ 4:27 am

me too.
Just got off the phone with them. I asked if it would be shipping directly and the agent said, “I believe so”.

Order Support is still as wishy washy with the info but maybe charging my card is a good sign.

Fingers crossed for everyone else too.

Comment by jlh 12.07.05 @ 5:11 am

Hmmm… I just went through the same dance. They told me that the email was sent automatically since the order had sat so long without being processed.

The one I talked to said she had no idea when they might ship, but they “hoped” sometime in December.

Aarrgghh!

Comment by Tim 12.07.05 @ 5:17 am

Why don’t you just get one on Ebay…..$ extra, but that’s what we get to be an early adopter!

Comment by Bud Olivares 12.07.05 @ 7:32 am

mine too is ‘v2′. what does it mean?

Comment by WirelessDJ 12.07.05 @ 7:50 am

CompUSA has no more stock for online order.

:(

Comment by Alan 12.07.05 @ 2:32 pm

I got that email as well, and called Nokia. The representative assured me that there was in fact nothing wrong with my order, and that she believed that those e-mails have been sent in error.

I checked out eBay, and it looks like the 770 is going for between $400 and $420. (Plus delivery charges, but no tax). Personally, I can wait a few weeks and save 50 to $100, and to me, eBay is a last resort — if I absolutely positively needed something rare before Christmas.

With regard to the CompUSA deal, I agree that it was a boneheaded move from the perspective of keeping customers happy, but there is no question in my mind that the appearance of the 770 and CompUSA weeks before the fulfillment of direct orders is the result of the fulfillment of a contractual obligation with CompUSA made weeks or even months ago (remember, the 770 was supposed to be delivered in the third quarter of this year) and not gross incompetence or greed.

Remember, in America, happy lawyers are more important than happy customers, and Nokia is making an attempt to keep the lawyers happy, even if it means pissing off a lot of early adopters.

Retailing is an ugly business, and this kind of thing happens all the time, especially a product where the first customer ship has been delayed by two or three months.

Enjoy :-)

Comment by TeeSee 12.07.05 @ 9:13 pm

TeeSee, agree. Anyhoo, I had decided to wait a month or two anyway in order to at least give a chance to Nokia to fix the (inevitable) major bugs in the initial firmware. I tend to get frustrated with gadgets that don’t work (giving them the finger and cursing - retarded, ain’t I? :) ), so I thought it better to give my blood pressure at least some chance of not going to 15 Bar when I finally get it… lol..

I just came home from CompUSA… I’m typing this from my new Nokia 770! Their website said ‘limited aavailability’. They had two left. Now I guess they only have one left.

Comment by Derek W. 12.08.05 @ 9:29 am

A local CompUSA has a couple of the 770s. I purchased one over the phone and will pick it up tonight. CompUSA is also having a special sale sunday night w/ 10% off anything, that brings the price down to $360 or whar Nokia is asking for.

I’ve been debating between the 770, pda(Dell Axim x51v) or Sony PSP as a wifi browser. In the end, having the 800×480 display was the most important factor for me.

ONCE AGAIN I work for Nokia and believe it or not. Us poor uninformed CS reps don’t know crap about the device, yet we take the abuse for not knowing when if or anything about the shipping status we know that we are told and believe it or not our supers only know as much as we do so PLEASE stop calling us with that crap, whining that you want your order you want free shipping, you want me to do handstands, to bring the troops home WE CAN”T DO IT!!!!! you all knew that you were making preorders PRE ORDERS!!!!! meaning when we have then you will get them but til then cut us some slack we don’t know nor do we want to hear you telling us what Nokia should or should not have done. we are Reps NOT the powers that be so stop clowning!!!!

Comment by misty 12.09.05 @ 9:47 am

Misty, I hope your attitude when you’re working is a little more professional that that.

And if you’re taking flak (about the release I mean, personal comments against YOU I agree are not on) then it is your responsibility to pass those concerns upwards to your managers. And their job to pass it up to their managers and so on.

And hopefully, next time, they won’t make such a hash of a product release.

Comment by Simon 12.09.05 @ 1:19 pm

Simon I am a CS rep Of course i am professional on the phones That of course is my job. Taking “flak” however is not! Simply put complaing about the release to us is futile. We are well aware of the problems but we just have no other information other than what is given. Product Release problems go way beyond a Customer service Manager. We understand your frustrations and my previous attitude reflects what I want to tell a customer on the phone. Instead of whining about it to us then go to the website logged youur complaints on the “contact us section “

Got my 770 at CompUSA yesterday and ordered a 512 rs-mmc card at NewEgg for $35 and went to Walmart and purchased a Pelican Play Station Portable Starter Kit with case and screen protectors product code PL-6035.

Comment by Edw 12.10.05 @ 12:46 pm

My local CompUsa had 3 770’s on Dec. 6th when I bought mine and I bought the last one. They have not had anymore since. I was really surprised this store even had any- they don’t typically stock the more esoteric items(PSP’s came in months later and still no accessories and very few games). Even more surprising was the quantity of N90 camera phones. There was still quite a few yesterday (about 6), but I can understand now since they are supposed to be for TMobile which is lousy around here. This 770 has been one of the best impulse purchases I’ve made.

Comment by hecklerz 12.11.05 @ 5:47 pm

Picked-up a 770 tonight at CompUSA using their cost plus 5% promotion tonight 8pm-11pm, I got it for $320 plus tax.

Comment by Capt_Caveman 12.12.05 @ 11:46 am

Hey Caveman, CompUSA only 10% off or $399-$40 plus tax, can you scan your receipt for the rest of us? Not that I don’t beleive you!

Comment by Bud Olivares 12.12.05 @ 11:06 pm

Misty,

I know you guys suffer. I called to register my 770 as an owner. The rep kept asking for a EIN. He was trained to “know” that the 770 was not a phone, but could not register the item since your program either through the web, or a CS associate doesn’t accept the serial number as correct.

Anyone available to fix that?

Steve

Comment by Steve 12.12.05 @ 11:49 pm

Bud, I will when I get home. Initially, the 770 ran up w/ only the 10% off but I spoke to the store manager and after a little bit of a discussion, she originally considered it a cell phone but later agreed it was a internet/pda device, gave me the cost plus 5% for pda’s. A few folks had already done it over at internettablettalk.com, so that’s how I got the idea to be a little persistent about it.

Comment by Capt_Caveman 12.13.05 @ 2:02 am

Steve,

Just that simple acknowledgement of our taking the beating for the 770 internet tablet release was refreshing. And to answer your question, Yes, Steve it is our tech guys that help you with registering but just keep in mind you don’t need “service” just need to be in a “hotspot” wi-fi area

I’ve been back to CompUSA a few more times to play with the Nokia 770, but I still haven’t purchased one. Nevertheless, I’ve been wondering why only CompUSA had this device for sale before the holiday season. That question might have been answered when I stumbled onto http://www.pepper.com/products/specifications.html today, now being sold through Best Buy online.

The Pepper Pad runs MontaVista Linux kernel 2.4, so I put in a call to understand the MontaVista SDK distribution policy (no reply yet). The Pepper Pad is twice as costly and large as the Nokia 770, but very interesting in it’s own regard. I thought others might be interested to know about it’s availability, since it offers similar functionality to the Nokia 770.

Comment by Jason Pester 12.17.05 @ 5:46 am

And last, but not least, a relative of the Nokia 770?… http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/335/C1757/ (obviously reworked a little to Nokia’s specs, but it’s basically the same form factor and very similar in hardware)

Have a great holiday!

Comment by Jason Pester 12.17.05 @ 7:17 am

Cool, but that Pepper Pad is Butt ugly and weighs 2.3 lbs.

Comment by Bud Olivares 12.18.05 @ 5:52 am

Well, I’m finally the owner of a Nokia 770… purchased at CompUSA :) After much thought and experimentation, the device’s screen resolution, price, and size make the device an absolute bargain.

If you look at the NEXiO S160 (est. $1,300 USD), which is obviously a precursor to the Nokia 770, video out was removed, Compact Flash was replaced by RS-MMC, and Windows CE was replaced by Linux, but much of the internals still remain the same.

It doesn’t seem that my Samsung NEXiO S160 link above currently works, so here’s another…
http://www.dynamism.com/nexio/index.shtml

There also appear to be Samsung XP30 / XP40 models out there as well (XP30 est. $675 USD), but I think all NEXiO’s had limited distribution.

While maintaining a similar feature set, the Nokia 770 is less expensive than all Samsung NEXiO models.

Also, I’ve read that Web browser AJAX implementation is currently a problem in most portable devices. This was my initial issue with the Nokia 770, since it doesn’t enable Google Maps to work properly. Hmmm… http://www.mapquest.com/pda

Well, time to charge the Nokia 770 battery.

P.S. - Yep, the Pepper Pad is pretty large. ‘Would require a very big pocket :)
