A software upgrade next year will enable the 770 with VoiP telephony. Will the device feature also conventional telephony to become some kind of “intelligent phone” - “handheld” combination?
No. We believe that by not including the conventional telephony we can create more internet focused consumer devices. This gives us advantages in flexibility, speed, and features. This is not your swiss-army-knife but a focused internet product concentrating on email, browsing, internet telephony, instant messaging, online music and video and other such things.

Question-why did you NOT put in an Ethernet plug. Half the hotels have only ethernet. Then connection would be everywhere.

I’m carrying around a very small (sigarette packet size) Asus ethernet/wireless adapter, just for such purposes. I plug it into the hotel ethernet and I have wireless in my room. Works with my Palm and other wi-fi enabled gadgets. The adapter works the other way around too (eth->wi-fi), and can be powered by wall or usb. It even works as a bridge. Flexible!

i think that adding conventional telepony to 770 would make it a killer device. Think about it: feature-rich handheld/internet device + mobile phone(becouse you don’t have WiFi and Ethernet everywhere, like in buses, planes, undeveloped countries and such).i think it would b best smartphone ever.

If the carrier lets you, get only a data plan on the phone & use N770 to make VOIP calls. The VOIP calls would be free if calling other VOIP numbers. There would be a small charge to call conventional/cellular numbers.

The word “microphone” does not appear in the user guide. Without one, how is VOIP supposed to work? USB microphone? A built-in microphone and input jack would be more convenient. Of course, when should Nokia draw the line feature-wise? It’s a PADD, not a tricorder, after all. :)

bluetooth headset would be the best device for using voip - i’m expecting that this will be the recommended way of calling. its true that the 770 has no mic, so the bluetooth headset is the next best thing.

Marko, bull. IMO that is :) With a phone the device would be even larger than now and would be highly uncomfortable. Bundling it with a bluetooth phone is better, IMO.

1. Has anybody actually USED SKYPE on a Nokia 770, with either a usb mic or a bluetooth headphone?
2. Can you browse the Internet with the 770 using the regular DSL connection, without having to pay for an extra “data” plan?
