Engadget pays attention to the shipping deadline moving to January 2006 now. From their write-up it sounds like Nokia is super-secretive about its plans on 770, and allowed for multiple delays, although it’s worth noting that Nokia missed just one deadline - Q3 2005. The rest was unsubstantiated rumors, to which Nokia got somehow committed? Why don’t we have another unsubstantiated headline “Nokia delays 770 to [tomorrow’s date]” and then another complaint “Nokia missed that too, that’s a 6th deadlines miss”.
Overall, however, it seems that they’re trying to avoid the N-Gage launch disaster.
Nokia didn’t miss just one deadline. When I ordered my device on the 14th, the website stated it would ship on the 17th. Some people placed their orders BECAUSE the device would ship on the 17th (say, for my Dad’s b-day present on the 25th). That was another missed deadline. When I called on the 18th I was told the unit would ship on Monday. Yet another missed deadline.
Nokia had better have some major improvements when the device finally ships. That is the only scenario I see that would satisfy consumers. If we wait till mid December for the same device (and same problems), I will be very disappointed.
Comment by JC 11.24.05 @ 3:29 amJC, you have a good point. I am not trying to be apologetic for them, I am saying that people are quick to blame them with something they never committed to - certain shipping deadline.
Promise to ship a *bought* product and not shipping it out is certainly a mess.
Comment by admin 11.24.05 @ 3:37 amThe worst part is that they take your money with the promise to ship in two days. When they don’t ship, they don’t even bother to send an email. Even if they are having production problems or supply shortages, that’s no reason to have poor customer service.

Comment by Tim 11.24.05 @ 4:26 amI’d have to agree with JC, my case for missed dead lines is when I purchase it and the system says to be shippped the 17th.
To make matters worse, their order support has no idea what is going on and seem to be giving out random information.
I have high hopes for this platform and Nokia, but currently they are scoring an F- for execution.
Come on Nokia — Say something — If you don’t then some one else will start speaking for you. It is already happening.
Comment by jlh 11.24.05 @ 5:16 amThey do NOT take your money- you are not charged till the 770 ships.
Comment by andy 11.24.05 @ 6:50 amLike JC says the Nokia web site has definitely been giving out bad information. That’s their official site so I would say anything they say on there can be counted as official Nokia dates. And they have missed several.
I do wonder what the sign up for email updates thing was for since I have never received anything from them.
Comment by Simon 11.24.05 @ 6:53 amI think the popularity of the 770 in the states has blown NokiaUSA away; clearly, the email database they stockpiled was to be used to sell people on why they should buy a 770. With the high demand that was turned out, everyone forgot about the email thing, and focused on getting product in stock.
I will agree with both JC and jlh — I ordered with next day shipping to receive it on the 18th. No emails, no calls, no contact. I call and find out the status on my own.
For shame, Nokia — and I really was starting to warm up to your increasingly fresh GSM handsets, too.
Nevertheless, I will patiently wait until my 770 arrives.
Comment by Neil 11.25.05 @ 10:27 pmI also agree. I ordered it with the understanding that it would ship on the 17th. When it didn’t, I called, and they had no information. Then the website changed and said “will not ship before December”. And now, a week later, it changed again and says “will not ship before January”. And the only way to find that out is to pretend to order one. Meanwhile, Nokia has not sent me even a single Email telling me the status of my order.
I am not happy!
Comment by MD 11.25.05 @ 10:56 pmWith this many people saying things like “..No emails, no calls, no contact. I call and find out the status on my own… Nevertheless, I will patiently wait until my 770 arrives” it will be pretty hard to call customer service, complain, and demand free stuff or token gifts!!! Come on people! Start calling Nokia and demanding free stuff!!
