Unprecedented demand
Thursday November 10th 2005, 3:53 am Category: Nokia 770 news

Looks like Nokia is havind hard time with high demand for 770. TechSauna quotes an e-mail from Nokia asking to wait just a bit more:

We have received your order and are processing accordingly.
However due to unprecedented demand for the product, the delivery will be slightly delayed.
Estimated time of delivery is end of November 2005.

Just got off the phone with Nokia (USA). They are sold out with no idea of when they will have any more in stock. Wish I would have known they were on sale earlier. :(

OK since you got to order yours….HOW MUCH WAS THE US PRICE? I have called them several times and they refuse to release any info as to price or availablity. They even claimed that the unit is still not available in the US and to keep watching their site www.nokiausa.com/770. This is as of Nov. 10, 2005 at 11am CST.

I ordered mine on friday afternoon, got it Tuesday evening. I just checked here http://direct.nokia.com/Countries.aspx?u=/Product.aspx?model=770 . Now it looks that whole Europe is sold out.
I believe this was a kind of silent pre-sale. On this page http://www.nokia.be/UK/Phones/PhoneModels/index.html there was still on monday mentioned that the 770 was “coming soon”. A Brussels based large Nokia retailer was even surprised when I showed the tablet to him. They don’t even know when they will get it.
I can’t believe Nokia has underestimated demand. There must be another reason. Creating a hype? Waiting for possible bugs? Going slowly so that they don’t need to give to much support..???

I think that Nokia is totally aware of the demand. I would not be a bit surprised to see them raise the price of this device to around $450us due to the fact they do not have any competition. When the rumored Apple Computer’s iTablet hits the market I can assure you it will be in the $450us price range…maybe even more. At that time Nokia will be more agressive with thier price placement. It is just elementry economics, when the demand is high the price should be high. Only a fool would sell an item for $350 when the same people are willing to pay $450 for it. I HOPE I AM WRONG.

Is TechSauna from Europe? Otherwise, how did an order get placed? Jeepers!?

I seriously doubt it’s a deliberate ploy by Nokia. You can possibly imagine some weird strategy they are trying to pull off buy deliberatly holding back units but normally the best strategy for companies it to sell people what they want.
I think the more likely explanation is that they got their fingers burned with the n-gage which sold much FEWER than they expected so this time they didn’t make so many units.
