Will Nokia 770 work with external USB storage?
Saturday November 05th 2005, 2:01 am Category: Nokia 770 FAQ

Tim here is asking whether 770 will work with external USB storage. We explored the 770 and USB story before, so I guess the official answer would be - out of the box it won’t, but with some modifications it will. The only problem I foresee is that few of those external USB hard drives come with their own power supply.

I guess an ipod would work, but not for too long!

I’ve got an RCA Lyra 2854A - - 40GB, detected by the PC as an external drive once plugged in. Self powered, however I don’t know if it leeches power from the host. When the 770 finally finds it’s way to Canada I’ll try to see if I can get it going.

I’m going to have to splice together a USB cable that has type ‘B’ connectors at either end, aren’t I…

I’ve a iAUDIO X5 that’s detected as a USB storage device by Windows, Linux, Mac and etc… It does have a configuration option for charging via USB on and off, so I hope it could be used without any problem.
(By the way… too bad 770 don’t have USB charging… it’s a shame for such a small device require so much cables when a simple option’s available!)

I have a Gmini that I use to offload photos from a CF card when I’m on a long vacation. It is battery powered.

I would just like to view the images off the Gmini on that nice 800×480 screen.

So you can’t buy a cable with the small USB connectors on both ends?

Can I access network hard drives with 770 through wlan? Assuming that the hard drive is in the same intranet network…

770 has USB host-controller? I’d like to know whether I can connect USB input device(keyboard, mouse) to 770.

The 770 has a slave USB interface.

Unlike ethernet, USB is asymmetric, so devices are either host or slave. A desktop computer is a host. A slave device like a disk cannot talk to another slave device.

What about a Nano? If the Ipod was set to “use as disk’, and you could find a mini USB adapter, would it work? The Nano would have it’s own supply… hmmm

You can get both keyboard and disks work over usb. You have to create a special cable and have a usb hub with external power.

ok question why can’t you use a custom usb mini to mini cable if the device you’re connecting to is self powered ie a digital camera, or ipod? Just wondering.

There is a USB Mini-B Femail adapter available on ebay that would allow an external USB hard disk to be attachhed to the 770.

See this link http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-MINI-B-5PIN-MALE-TO-A-FEMALE-ADAPTER-BEST_W0QQitemZ220015261821QQihZ012QQcategoryZ41993QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Otherwise search on ebay for “USB Mini B female adapter”

I have both of these, arriving soon so will test this with my Vosonic VP6210 self powered 80GB hard disk.
