Over on Mark’s Geeky Ramblings Matk suggests 770 is an interesting new class of PDAs he believes have a future:
Meanwhile, non-cell PDA’s continue to develop, like the Nokia 770. At $350 for a well sized, 800×480 resolution machine with built in WiFi and Bluetooth, it could be a great platform for software innovation.
That’s coming from a person who has owned *lots* of PDAs, it seems like.
Speaking of markets for the 770…
I have not seen much discussion of women as a market for the 770 as a PDA. Now, one may wonder why women would think the 770 to be a reasonably sized PDA while men think it too bulky. The answer: purses! Most men I know who use PDAs like them to fit in their pockets. However, many women carry purses which allows a greater range of device size.
Comment by Erika 10.04.05 @ 12:06 amAs a scientist, this is not the kind of device I want. Similar, but loaded with much to much junk. I just want a folding, two page, book that can hold thousands of pages of hand written text. Built in algorithms should include: handwriting to text; symbolic mathematics; proof checker and proof generator; persistent display (e.g.e-ink); solar cells on book jacket for battery recharging; and wireless communication.
Comment by Douglas G. Danforth 10.04.05 @ 12:24 amGet back to me when I can grab any Bluetooth headset and use the tablet to call someone via GSM and let the audio go through the headset.
Comment by Richard 10.04.05 @ 1:02 amThe set drawn by Mr. Douglas G. Danforth already exists, built by Sony or OQO, Acer and so on; Nokia itself, with its 9500, has a reasonable, even if reduced, solution a 650 €. First problem, the prices:a real portable with a 8″ or 10″ screen may list from 1200 up to 2000 €. Second problem, the size: it’s a truth what Erika says about the use of fitting PDAs in our pockets, but I’m an Architect, moving and needing for email connection with their attachements of *.XLS and *.DOC, and schemes and some explicative drawings converted in *.PDF. Well, with a Bluetooth connection via a small cellular phone (in my pocket), I will at last be able to read on something smaller than a FiloFax, and priced like a good portable phone. And the overall cost will be always less than the half of a PC. When I need to write some serious text or spreadsheet, or to draw a plan, I need more than a PC: I need a little more time, and a desk! So, I hope the street price will be lower than 300 €!
