Dec 30th?
Wednesday December 07th 2005, 6:21 am Category: Nokia 770 news

Neil McAllister writes:

I received the following e-mail this afternoon. When I called the Nokia number, the operator on the phone guessed right away that I was calling about the 770 and told me that the e-mail I received was probably generated because I was one of the very earliest people to order the tablet.

She said that when people originally ordered the tablet the Web site said delivery was expected on November 17 and people had “misinterpreted” that do mean that delivery would actually happen for sure on that date. “Due to unforeseen circumstances,” the units hadn’t yet arrived at the warehouse, and they were sending out the e-mails to confirm with people that they still wanted to receive the tablets.

I asked when they were now expected to arrive and she said there was no firm date, but that it had been suggested that the warehouse could expect them December 30. Even that, she said, was not a firm date — the fact that the e-mails were being generated now could be interpreted as a sign that the units would arrive sooner — but basically, nobody should get
their hopes up.

I received an email today informing me that unless I call nokiausa in the next 72 hours, my order would be canceled.

I called them up, they had to reauthorize my card.

I asked when they’d ship. “Sorry, honey, I just can’t say.”

I whined a little that if it ships to the dorms when I’m home, it would be at a front desk for a month until I get back.

She explained that they have a bunch of units in stock, and are shipping some as we speak, so I should receive my unit within a week.

I got the same email…..”confirm” I still wanted the Nokia 770. My Nokia person said they will be sent “in December”. WOW

Comment by Bud Olivares 12.07.05 @ 7:28 am

Yep, I got the same email… I called right away. The rep didn’t know anything, not even why the emial was sent out now. I took it as a good sign, though. Anyway, she told me December 14th. Yeah….riiiiiight.

I got the same email. However last night I called around to a few CompUSA’s and it turns out they have them in stock. So I picked one up. Out of the box it was defective so I called Nokia “Advanced Support”. They said the 770 is still in testing for the USA and will not be available for at least 3 months. They said “CompUSA should not sell them yet” because Nokia USA is not yet ready to support it. Anyway I went back to CompUSA and swapped mine for one that works. I am now a happy owner of a functional 770.

What a messy product launch!

Comment by Victor 12.07.05 @ 10:47 am

I went down to my local (Lombard, IL) CompUSA last Sunday and picked one up. They had three in stock. They were even in the local Sunday flyer. It is worth the extra $40 to just go get one and then call and cancel (hit 0 after calling). Though it still royally sucks that Nokia didn’t fulfill our web orders first.

Comment by Eric 12.07.05 @ 11:01 am

I got the e-mail at 7:40pm PST. Called right away thinking something was wrong with the credit card or something. The representative went through all the information “because if they are not right something bad can happen” and said that maybe if everything was correct there was a small chance that my order would get fullfilled soon “because they are processed in the order they are received” (and even if you pre-ordered a month ago, too bad, now it goes in the order they received the magic call.

Anyway, will I get my Christmas presente BEFORE Christmas or will I have to cancel my order and go look for something else ? :)

Mine shipped yesterday! it’s currently in germany. It shipped from Belgium yesterday.

I ordered mine 7 Nov. Only took a month :)

I had exactly the same experience as the original poster. I was told it would ship “around Dec 30″ but we might get lucky and get them a bit earlier.

Comment by Nelsonic 12.07.05 @ 10:18 pm

I ordered my 770 around 1pm EST on Nov 15.

I called this morning and spoke with a Customer Service Misrepresentative, and confirmed my credit card information.

She said it would be shipping out of the warehouse within 24 hours, and said that it would *probably* be later today, but it might be tomorrow.

Comment by Todd 12.07.05 @ 10:38 pm

What a bunch of crap. All they are trying to do is thin out the herd. Bottomline, Nokia, you are making it more difficult for people to do business with you. You had on your site “available” when I ordered. Even with supply issues why waste my time and the time of hundreds of other people so you can reverify credit card information that hasn’t changed. What a bunch of crap. I’ve been a big nokia fan and between myself and my company have purchased 50+ Nokia phones in the last couple of years but with crap like this I’m beginning to look at other models.

SHIPPED!!!

Ordered on November 14th from nokiausa (early). Got the email yesterday. Called today, and they charged my credit card and the unit is shipping out today.

The rep told me they took approx 1200 backorders. The first 430 were processed, charged and shipped today. If you were one of the first 430 to place your order, it’s on its way!

That leaves approx 770 backorders (funny number, right?). The rep had no idea when those might be filled.

Comment by JC 12.08.05 @ 1:08 am

It is pathetic. It looks like Nokia wants to kill Nokia 770 or have back thoughts…

Comment by V 12.08.05 @ 3:34 am

Lol.. people get really worked up about this, as if this is the first time in history there is a hick up in a product launch and you get bounced around in customer service etc. Frankly, my experience that 99.9% of the time customer service in the US in electronics stores AND phone help centers simply sucks. It is just astonishing that e.g Cingular people have no clue on most things. The good news for 770 is that the fact that people are so irritated shows they really want the damn thing.. lol..

Got an email from Nokia yesterday that my 770 shipped! Should receive it on Monday. This is after I received the email and had to call in to confirm my interest in the unit.

Comment by RS 12.08.05 @ 8:47 pm

Got my email this morning, with tracking number! Should arrive Dec12th. Ordered mine Nov 16 too.

Hey Thomas you left off your order & tracking #’s in the post. I’m sure that was an oversight.. heh

BtW: the total on mine came out to less than was calculated at order time. Tax was less.

Comment by Ima pseudonym 12.08.05 @ 8:57 pm

Just checked (both MasterCard and email) .. Mine hasn’t shipped yet, and I ordered on the 15th (according to THEIR records). So the order fulfillment is not quite in perfect synchronization with the order placement. More like the shuffling of a deck of cards :-)

Keep in mind that this is just a gadget, nothing more. And a lottery to be the first geek on the block should be more of a fun thing, not something for stress :-)

Finally, if you’d gambled some $3500 in Nokia stock over this week, you’d have done well — it’s up about 10% in the past week — enough for a free 770 :-) . Coincidence?

Comment by TeeSee 12.08.05 @ 10:42 pm

I received my shipping confirmation e-mail with FedEx tracking number from Nokia USA this morning - the 770 should be delivered Monday, Dec. 12th! I placed my order on November 16th. Not too bad after all… A little patience goes a long way - got mine for $309.99 after Salvage 09 coupon discount ($90 less than CompUSA). BTW, tax amount was only $19, half of what was originally quoted.

Comment by Mike 12.09.05 @ 12:00 am

I just called Nokia USA customer support to get a tracking number, since they hadn’t e-mailed it to me yet. Now they’re apologizing for telling me yesterday that it would ship out within 24 hours, because they say now that they don’t have any more in stock after the 300 that shipped out yesterday, and they don’t know when they’ll get any more in.

Fuckers.

I was nice to the poor guy on the phone, and didn’t blame him for the misinformation given to me by someone else yesterday. But I did ask him to put in a complaint for me.

Comment by Todd 12.09.05 @ 1:15 am

Hmmm. I ordered on the 14th and mine hasn’t shipped yet :(

I got an email this morning, dated Dec. 8, 2005 9:06 AM. I “needed” to verify information within 72 hours or have the order canceled. Short of it: They’re prepping orders to ship. Ship my order soon? Don’t know, but they’re getting stock weekly…

I ordered Nov. 18th.

Comment by Vinh 12.09.05 @ 1:54 am

I ordered on Nov. 15, and called two days ago as soon as I got the e-mail. Still didn’t receive any confirmation and my order is still open :(

Comment by Raff 12.09.05 @ 2:24 am

I just got an e-mail from nokia confirming the 770 shipment with a tracking number. It is almost half way here.
I ordered mine on Nov. 16
They have also charged my credit card.

Comment by Tigan 12.09.05 @ 2:45 am

I, too, ordered mine on the 15th and I have already done the customer support phone-call dance, but I have received no notification that mine is being shipped.

To Viipottaja, no, this certainly isn’t the first time a product launch has been botched. But the thing is, pre-orders are a really good thing for companies. I’m sure everybody agrees it’s nice to know that there’s a strong market for a product before it even ships.

This is why Nokia’s handling of this seems perplexing. Why e-mail the people who were waiting in line to get your product before it even shipped and tell them you’re going to cancel their orders if they don’t wait on hold on an 800 number hotline? Why not fulfill the orders in the order in which they were received?

None of it makes Nokia a bad company, but it certainly burns their goodwill among the customers that, in theory, should be the most valuable to them for a product launch like this one: The early adopters. Seems like a mistake.

Anyway, I’m crossing my fingers that they will ship mine before X-Mas, and not sometime next year as I was told.

Comment by Neil McAllister 12.09.05 @ 2:59 am

Same here, got my email this morning, called to confirm the card number (maybe their credit card service does not allow to keeo an authorisation for more than 20 days and they needed to re-authorise… that could explain why we need to call).

I was also told to expect my 770 within the next couple weeks (which is what I was told every single time I called since mid november…duh!)

Comment by Will 12.09.05 @ 3:41 am

After a month or two from now, no one will even remember this incident. Now, go play with your kid, talk to your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/friend, hit the gym, help your neighbor, live your life. Quit whining, our toys will arrive eventually.

Comment by L00ter 12.09.05 @ 4:28 am

It no longer matters when you placed your order. It only matters when you called to verify the order and CC info. 1st to order and last to call? Too bad, end of the line. I know, it sucks.

That is what a Nokia rep told me, anyway.

Comment by JC 12.09.05 @ 4:42 am

I just made my call (14:10 PST 12/8/05) and the representative said that some would ship tomorrow (12/9/05), and others would ship next week. She said that based on when I ordered (11/15/05), mine might be shipped on 12/9/05. We’ll see what really happens. Most of the CompUSAs in the SF Bay Area are out of stock now.

Comment by Randall 12.09.05 @ 5:17 am

During my call, I asked if the verification meant that I would be getting one soon. She replied that she could say when, but that if I wanted it sooner, then I could buy one at CompUSA.

The CompUSA on Market St. in San Francisco has a few, at least before closing time last night.

Comment by Vinh 12.09.05 @ 6:32 am

I ordered on 11/15.

I received an e-mail today stating that the item was shipped today.

I got overnight shipping, so I’ll have it Friday by 3!

Comment by bri 12.09.05 @ 4:21 pm

Shipped yesterday, fedex already has it in town. I should have it this afternoon.

Comment by nj 12.09.05 @ 8:59 pm

The Market St Compusa is sold out. I went yesterday at lunch time. However, I am posting this from my 770 that I picked up in Concord lastnight. I’m currently at the dmv, so this is nice and handy.

Good:
Display is great
Does a good job of finding connections and connecting
Most of the time it’s pretty quick

Bad:
Overpriced - should be around $200-250
Not enough memory!!!!
Slow processor

Compusa has a good return policy, so I’ll play around w/ it and determine if it’s worth it.

Comment by Capt_Caveman 12.10.05 @ 12:11 am

Mine just arrived!! I ordered on Nov. 14th, cancelled and reordered on Nov. 16 using the $50 coupon, It was supposed to arrive Monday, but hey, it’s Christmas Theo, a time of miracles.

Comment by Hank Slingerland 12.10.05 @ 3:01 am

Got mine today. Ordered on the 14th. While I don’t appreciate the lack of official information from Nokia USA, I understand that most corporations here in the US are similarly dysfunctional.

Comment by nj 12.10.05 @ 4:47 am

nj, now that you have it, what do you think? I’m still debating if it was worth the money.

Comment by Capt_Caveman 12.10.05 @ 6:25 am

Super Rep to the rescue again.. Please let me elaborate a little for you. Most of you received the email because guess what gasp!!!!( dramatic music in the background) some orders were actually fraudulent so yes as inconvient as it may seem we have to verify orders with the financial institutions yet some of you get peeved when we ask for the info saying I have never been asked by any other company for that info but to make sure your order goes smooth why not just give us the info and wait .we have to protect you as well as ourselves against those out doing evil. As a consumer as well we know what its like to want an item and not be able to receive it. I guess my general plea is please be patient with us reps we are trying our best if we knew any more information we we gladly tell you. So the Screaming the yelling and the cursing must stop it only raises your blood pressure and makes us not want to do anything to try to please you and some of you wonder why you get automated systems . Its because when you get a live person on the phone you start screaming for us to make everything all better when it can’t be done instantly.

Comment by misty 12.10.05 @ 7:16 am

Misty,

Quit making excuses for why Nokia advertised on the website as “available” only to turn around and put everyone on backorder. Quit making excuses that the reverification is necessary to prevent fraud. There are plenty of ways to combat fraud without wasting my time and everyone elses time. You are NOT a super rep but only a company shrill who would rather make excuses for poor performance than apologize for wasting peoples time.

Comment by Russ 12.10.05 @ 10:14 am

sorry it took awhile to respond capt.

I’m actually writing this with it, and the on screen keyboard is really pretty good.

I’m loving it, I’ve been playing on itt all day.
The real deal maker is going to be how the community handles it, though. I’ve already put abiword, a calendar, a contacts list, and some games on it. I think that, if it can gain a decent “regular” consumer base, the modder community will have a great device for a while to come.

Comment by nj 12.10.05 @ 11:53 am

Russ,

I think someone needs to take a chill pill. Misty was just trying to inform and help here. No need to jump down someone’s throat.

I also agree its been fustrating but there is no need to take it out on the CS. You must also realize there is nothing that CS can do sometimes. The apporiate people you should vent your fustration on is sales/marketing folks at nokia, the ones who do have control of the situation.

Thank you for emailing Nokia Careline.

With regard to your enquiry, please be advised that unfortunately the Nokia 770 has not been scheduled for release in the Asia Pacific region at this point in time. All information will be updated on www.nokia.com.au

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.

So stop your whinging, I can’t even place an order.

Typing this w/ mine now. Man, the web page font is ssmall! About right when zoomed to 150%,but then can’t display enough of the page. Seems like simplest solution would be to let user set exact preferred font size…say 125%.. Only shows 100%, 150, 200, etc
Processor is a tad slow, but livable.

Hopefully, more font options will be avail in future updates.

I had 3 day shipping, so I’ll get mine Wednesday. Hope I like it ;)

aha, RE: the web display font size, there is under the main menu: VIEW, OPTIMIZED DISPLAY

Now when u zoom the pages will usually be re-formatted to fit the Nokia screen better while retaining the larger zoomed in fonts.

That’s a relief. I think I can handle that!

Check out www.shoutcast.com for a ton of good online radio. I was listening to an old-time BBC radio show, no problems at all. Good sound, no buffering problems. I was about to try out my fav radio site: www.live365.com which is a lot like Shoutcast, but I’ve worn the batteries down(hasn’t been thru the 1st charge yet…) and had to start charging.

Hi, any feedback on order status from people in Europe (particularly the UK). Held back due the Nokia UK online store ppl telling me “hmm might know when we are going to get stock sometime in your lifetime but not sure”, but actual signs of shipping stock make me think could be the time to jump.

Thanks

Comment by Steve 12.12.05 @ 6:58 am

Looks like mine also shipped on Friday :-) — I just got the email this morning ( I don’t check on weekends ), so it may arrive sometime on Wednesday.

One thing though — it looks like my credit card was charged $359.99 (to someonce called “PSS WEB PLANO TX”), rather than the $325.49 the invoice says I’m supposed to be charged. Did anyone else find this to be the case?

In no way am i making an excuse for NOKIA. What im saying is that Customers are blaming and calling and screaming at REPS. as a consumer i’d be upset as well but you must understand if we (reps ,supervisors, location managers )knew more we could give more info there is no inside info that anyone is keeping from the masses.AND TO BE CALLED a shrill by someone who clearly does not grasp that basic concept proves my point that

So glad everyone at Nokia is on the same page…

Comment by mrmike 12.16.05 @ 11:21 pm

I placed the order on November 17, and it arrived three days ago :-) interestingly, they did not charge my credit card the proper amount until two days ago.

Having played with it for a couple of days now, I can say that it is an idiosyncratic device. It seems smaller than it needs to be (at least for my needs) and because the screen resolution is so high, text can be extremely small. It is REALLY good at finding hotspots, although many of the hotspots it finds are commercial (i.e. pay) sites :-(

And perhaps it’s due to the nature of the browser included, but while most commercial sites (for example Amazon and eBay) are displayed without problems, many of the less commercial ones (for example, my local public school’s site, or www.onegoodmove.org) are almost unreadable.

My very short take on this is that I would love to would like to love it, but I don’t. It has a number of ergonomic oddities (for example, the stylus can be inserted or removed without slightly loosening the protective case) and design choices that caused me some annoyance. Like the very first MP3 players (before the iPod) I feel like I hold in my hand the potential for a great product. It just isn’t a very good one — yet.

I’m going to continue to play with it for some time, but I don’t know if I will keep it.

Comment by TeeSee 12.16.05 @ 11:21 pm

Argh! My local CompUSA was out-of-stock and now they’re restocked again!
