Karoliina: Which phone should accompany Nokia 770?

11 Comments so far

I’m going to be buying a phone to go with my new 770. Any other thoughts as to a good phone? Karolina lists some “must haves,” but it seems difficult to tell what features are actually enabled on particular phones.

I’m currently with Verizon Wireless, but may think about going to another service (my contract ends in January).

You want to get something with bluetooth if you are going to attempt to tether(connect) via bluetooth for web access on your 770. I would even go as far as to say to stick with a Nokia phone. The reason being is that I know other name brands tend to “limit” what can be done via bluetooth. But Verizon also, likes to force manufacturers to limit bluetooth capabilities as well. They don’t want you transferring .mp3’s to your phones unless it’s through the Verizon store. I also don’t know if Nokia’s tech support is limited in assisting you to connect a 770 via bluetooth. Try to take this all into consideration, it is alot, I know…. but who knows. Have other people had any luck tethering via Bluetooth with another brand phone? Research is the only way to find out. I’ll keep an eye out for any articles or posts which can be of assistance.

I’m thinking the same thing- I’m looking for a cheap phone with cheap net access.

Ideally, I could toss the phone in a bag and forget about it - use a BT headset paired to the phone for calls, maybe BT contact info back and forth between the 770, my PC, and the phone, have the phone bounce SMS into the 770, and let the 770 connect to the ‘net via BT when there’s no WiFi around.

The biggest hangup, I think, will be getting data access in an affordable manner. As far as I can see, the carriers all charge outrageous rates for their relatively slow data services, and severely limit functionality. I’m most interested in a mobile SSH client, and I think most services restrict use to just email and web, maybe IM too.

What are you folks out there using?

Verizon offers unlimited Broadband access with a very good coverage area. However, they disable most bluetooth capabities on their bluetooth phones. I have heard that you can hack the Motorola E815 so it can act as a modem for the N770. I am interested in what others are thinking on what phone & service provider they will be using with the N770. My desire is to use the phone only as a modem & to use VOIP(beginning in 1Q2006) to make calls.

over in canada its just an extra 20 dollars a month on your cell phone bill for unlimited access around town.

I have Cingular and once my 770 comes I think it’ll be time to get a new phone. But I really don’t know where to start… I don’t have much faith in the Cingular people to guide me, and I have a lot of questions about the data side of the service. Anyone with experience or knowledge of this aspect of Cingular service?

I am trying to get the 770 to use DUN over BT with my Verizon Audiovox XV6600, and am having no luck whatsoever.

I can transfer files ok, but when I try to use DUN, no luck. I set the XV6600 to require authorization, and when I try to connect I do see the authorize window. I click authorize, and nothing happens.

I noticed in the %gconf.xml file that the 770 thinks the XV6600 is not a cell phone, and does not assign it either a GPRS or CDMA identifier… could be a problem. I edited the file to make it think its a cell phone with CDMA, but that didn’t really do anything.

Any ideas?

IAfter a little tweaking, I got my N770 to tether tto a Moto V550 on the Cingular network using my aall-you-can-eat data plan. The problem is that tthe Moto is my wife’s phone, and I just swapped iin my sim to test it.

MMy primary phone is a Treo 650, which has funky bbluetooth dun problems, crashes at least twice ddaily, and although it has a great wow factor is ttoo unstable to use daily (but I keep trying).

TThis is a great board, and I will definitely post mmy results when I finally do replace the Treo (as ssoon as I see a decent pim and vector-based tturn-by-turn gps navigation software), along with ccomplete config instructions.

Hmmm… my first post lost the initial letters of each line in the text box. When I went back to edit… well… you can see the results.

I have to wonder if it’s the site, or my N770’s browser (I suspect the latter)

Works well with a Moto RAZR, a little tweaking and data access (T-Mobil) works too.
Filesystem limited to Audio, Video and Pictures, but for the most part thats all you really need
