A discussion on LinuxJournal brings up interesting point - can you use Nokia 770 with a GPS device to have some cool things, like in-car navigation and directions (provided you got the right software)? Russ Nelson suggested DeLorme BlueLogger (reviewed here), a $149 Bluetooth GPS receiver.
The problem isn’t the GPS receiver. They are very straight forward and can just output a simple ascii stream. The tricky bit is getting the right software to do the mapping. Actual intelligent routing and giving directions is even harder again. A very quick search on Google came up with this: http://gpsdrive.kraftvoll.at/features.shtml so I guess there is some Linux based software around. Maybe they might port to the 770. It would be a brilliant device for that given the nice high resolution screen.
Comment by Simon 11.10.05 @ 7:38 amI am the main author of such an application for the US: RoadMap. It works fine of an old iPAQ 200MHz, has a Gtk GUI (among others) so I guess it would work as fine on the Nokia.
I am actually drooling over these news: I think I know what I am going to ask Santa!
Comment by Pascal Martin 11.10.05 @ 2:06 pmI developed a GPS application (with speed, slope, direction and so on) and such a mapping application for a J2ME mobile. That’s not even tricky.
The trickiest part is in fact to retrieve maps in such a way that id doesn’t exhaust mobile’s memory.
So, if it’s possible on a mobile it could be, at least, possible on the 770.

Also, has anyone been able to install any software at all on a Nokia 770 yet?
